Position Summary

The role of the Residential Worker is to work as a team to ensure a safe and secure environment while offering unconditional support and displaying appropriate role-modelling behaviour at all times to Youth (females 16+ and Males 16 & 17), Women and Families who need to access our 19 bed emergency homeless shelter.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor all clients in shelter, 24/7
  • Mediate situations that arise in shelter, and refer to appropriate supports
  • Interact with clients, making every effort to understand, interpret, empower, and respond to client needs
  • Work as a team with partnering agencies and mental health supports that assist clients in shelter to help secure permanent housing
  • Complete intakes and discharges for all shelter clients
  • Complete clear and concise case notes and tracking sheets for each shelter client
  • Record in daily log book
  • Complete incident and service restriction reports as needed
  • Answer telephone in a clear and concise manner
  • Answer door and welcome visitors
  • Respond to general inquiries over phone and at door
  • Complete housekeeping duties: laundry, bedding, vacuuming, sweeping and mopping, assisting residents with assigned daily chores and dorm clean up, dish washing, sorting and organizing donations, and any other assigned chores
  • Cooking, meal planning and preparing with residents for 3 meals/day plus snack
  • Perform routine checks on entire facility during each shift
  • Other duties may be assigned due to dynamic nature of the work in the shelter

Skills and Qualifications

  • College or University graduate in the social work field
  • Experience working with clients that are experiencing multiple barriers (Mental Health, Addictions, Trauma) that have led them to homelessness is an asset
  • Must have excellent communication skills, verbally and written
  • Must have computer skills, and use of office equipment: Photocopying, fax machine, email
  • Must be organized and be able to work with minimal supervision
  • The physical ability to perform housekeeping duties, and capable of lifting heavy objects as needed
  • The acquired skills to deal rationally and diligently with crisis and emergency services
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills

Job Parameters 

  • Must be able to work nights, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays
  • Rate of pay is $13.00/ hour
